There is scaffolding hanging under the westbound Whoop-Up Drive bridge, and early on Wednesday morning it caught fire.
Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services was called at about 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2. Eleven firefighters from two stations found a fire involving the scaffolding and the construction materials tied to the bridge work. Burning debris fell into the valley and started several small spot fires on the west side of the Oldman River.
No one was hurt. At the time, the City said there were no traffic disruptions.
That changed a day later.
What is closed now
As of Thursday, September 3, the outside westbound lane at the west end of the Whoop-Up Drive bridge is closed, effective immediately.
The City is calling it precautionary. Engineers have determined the bridge remains safe for motorists; closing the lane gives them room to complete a full assessment. The speed limit stays at 70 km/h, and the City is asking drivers to take it easy through the area.
No reopening date has been given.
Practically, this is the pinch point of the corridor rather than the middle of it. West end, outside lane, on the busiest river crossing in the city. If you commute inbound from west Lethbridge in the morning you will not notice much; if you head west at 4:30 p.m., leave a few minutes earlier this week.
Why there was scaffolding under a bridge in the first place
This is the piece most people have not been following, and it explains both the fire and why the response was as careful as it was.
The City is replacing the bridge coating system on the westbound Whoop-Up Drive structure over the Oldman River. That means stripping the old lead-based paint off the underside of the bridge and applying a new coating. The work started in May and was expected to take several months.
Because it is lead paint over a river, containment is required under Alberta environmental regulations. Containment means the underside of the bridge is enclosed, and enclosing it means scaffolding secured to the structure. That is exactly the material that burned.
The project has been planned since 2019, when the eastbound structure was recoated, and sits in the City's 2022 to 2031 Capital Improvement Program as project C-9. The 2026 scope also includes recoating the north girder of the eastbound structure after damage the bridge took in an incident last summer.
The City's commitment through the project has been that a minimum of two westbound lanes stay open. Thursday's closure is the first real departure from that.

What is still unknown
The cause. The investigation is ongoing and the City has not put a theory in public. Scaffolding, containment sheeting and coatings work in combination are a known fire risk on bridge recoating projects, but nothing has been established here.
Whether the schedule moves. A fire in the containment system is not a small setback for a coating project. Damaged scaffolding and sheeting need to be replaced before painting can resume, and no revised timeline has been issued.
How long the lane stays closed. The City says it is until the full assessment is done.
The other Whoop-Up Drive work still to come
Two other things are live on this corridor. Botterill Bottom Road under the bridge goes down to one lane with alternating signal-controlled access while the containment area work happens, which the City had flagged for around early September. Separately, phases seven and eight of the Whoop-Up Drive and Scenic Drive interchange improvements are moving ahead, with earthwork in the river valley affecting eastbound drivers and pedestrians.
