Premier Danielle Smith has signalled Alberta may explore a halal insurance model for residents, making the comments at an Eid celebration held at McDougall Centre in Calgary.
The event brought together community members and provincial leaders including Ministers Muhammad Yaseen, Mickey Amery, and Rajan Sawhney, and was described by attendees as marked by strong community engagement.
Smith indicated Alberta may look at a halal insurance structure similar to models used in the Middle East, where participants contribute to a shared pool and may receive refunds on unused contributions if no claims are made. The model aligns with Islamic financial principles, which restrict conventional insurance and interest-based financial products.

Building on Existing Halal Financing
Minister Muhammad Yaseen noted at the same event that halal financing options are already available in the province. Alberta has been pursuing halal mortgage options as a government priority included in Finance Minister Nate Horner's mandate letter giving Muslim residents access to home financing structures that avoid interest payments through alternative arrangements such as cost-plus or shared ownership models.
Smith's comments suggest the province may look to extend that framework into the insurance sector.

The Significance of McDougall Centre
The event was held at McDougall Centre, the Government of Alberta's official southern Alberta office and one of Calgary's historic buildings. The province's decision to host an Eid celebration at its own official regional office signals a deliberate gesture of community outreach and inclusion by the UCP government.

Still Exploratory
No formal legislation or regulatory framework has been introduced. Smith's remarks represent an early indication of interest rather than a government policy announcement.
Minister Amery emphasized at the event that shared values continue to unite diverse groups across Alberta, framing the discussion around broader interfaith collaboration.
