Canada's first Shake Shack drive-thru opens in Calgary on August 27, and it's arriving early.
When the company announced the location in June, it said fall 2026. The doors open at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, at 9253 Macleod Trail S.W., between Chick-fil-A and Adrenalin Source for Sports.
That's about three kilometres south of the Chinook Centre location that opened in May. Two Shake Shacks on the same road, three months apart.
200 jobs
The number the company put on this in June: after the Macleod Trail opening, Shake Shack's Alberta locations are expected to generate approximately 200 jobs.
That's across both Calgary restaurants, not the drive-thru alone, and it's the company's own projection rather than a confirmed payroll. But for a chain that had zero Alberta staff in April, it's the figure that matters more locally than the shake flavour.
Why that block
Calgary was chosen for the country's first drive-thru because of demand for on-the-go dining in the city and what the company describes as the response since Chinook opened.
The block itself was a deliberate pick. Michael Kehoe, broker at Fairfield Commercial, said the choice of the 9200-block of Macleod Trail South reinforces that area as the bullseye sweet spot for quick-service restaurants with drive-thru capability in Calgary.
Look at the neighbours and you can see the logic. Chick-fil-A is next door. This stretch of Macleod already funnels drive-thru traffic, and Shake Shack is slotting into a pattern rather than testing one.

What Chinook doesn't have
A drive-thru combo meal, and Alberta exclusives including a Prairie Berry Shake.
"We've designed this location to deliver the same cooked-to-order experience Shake Shack is known for, while offering the speed and ease that guests are looking for," said Billy Richmond, business director for Shake Shack Canada.
The core menu is unchanged. ShackBurgers with Alberta beef, crispy chicken, crinkle-cut fries, hand-spun milkshakes and frozen custard.
Every Shack gets a local artist
Calgary artist Larissa Schuler hand-painted a mural on the exterior back wall, positioned to be seen from the drive-thru lane.
Chinook has one inside by Calgary artist Irene Neyman. Toronto's Union Station has work by Pui Yan Fong, Yorkdale by Vivian Rosas.
Who owns Shake Shack Canada
It's a joint venture formed in 2023 between two Toronto private investment firms, Osmington Inc. and Harlo Entertainment Inc. Osmington is owned by David Thomson, of Canada's wealthiest family.
The original agreement set a target of 35 Canadian restaurants by 2035.

Is Edmonton getting one?
Nothing has been announced. Not Edmonton, not Red Deer, not Lethbridge.
As of August 27 the company will have nine locations, seven in Ontario and two in Calgary. That leaves 26 to open by 2035.
The pattern in the first nine points at high-traffic transit hubs and major regional shopping centres, plus now a suburban drive-thru corridor. Edmonton has both kinds of site. Nobody from the company has mentioned either.
August 27 is effectively the test. A strong result on Macleod Trail is the argument for going north. A quiet one isn't.
Calgary and opening-day lineups
The drive-thru opens beside the Chick-fil-A that drew waits of more than two hours when it opened.
A Cochrane man camped out overnight to be first through the door at Calgary's Krispy Kreme.
Whether a drive-thru changes that math is the open question. A lane backing onto Macleod behaves differently than a lineup inside a mall.

Shake Shack started as a hot dog cart in New York's Madison Square Park in 2001, with the first permanent Shack opening on the same site in 2004. It now has more than 695 locations worldwide.
