The City of Calgary will pay an apprentice welder up to $48.34 an hour.
The job runs on a 40-hour week, Friday to Monday. At the top of the range, that works out to about $100,547 a year. That's more than many of the City's office jobs that ask for a degree.
And it isn't even the best-paying trade on the list.
The welder job is one of 53 City of Calgary jobs still open after Nov. 2 on our job board. Every one lists its pay. They run from a $15.74-an-hour skate monitor job open to 16-year-olds to a Calgary Police Service clinical director at up to $199,512 a year. Calgary police are also hiring three deputy chiefs at once.
Seventeen of them close by Friday.

The trades pay six figures without a degree, but they aren't beginner jobs
None of these need university. They do need a trade ticket, the right licence and, for most, years on the tools.

*Our estimate: the top hourly rate × the posted weekly hours (40 for the instrumentation, fire mechanic and welder jobs, 38 for HVAC and plumbing) × 52 weeks. These aren't advertised salaries, and temporary jobs won't last a full year at that rate.
Being an apprentice doesn't make this an entry-level job. An apprentice is partway through a recognized trades training program, earning while they learn. To get this one you need a high school diploma or GED, a completed second year of a welder apprenticeship recognized by Alberta's apprenticeship board, and a Class 5 licence with no more than six demerits. Shifts run Friday to Monday, 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Both positions are temporary, for up to 18 months.
The fire mechanic keeps Calgary Fire's trucks running out of a shop at 1755 18 Ave. NE. You need a heavy-duty equipment or truck and transport mechanic ticket, a Class 3 licence with air brakes, and you have to become a certified emergency vehicle technician within three years. Both openings are permanent, on a four-day week.
The plumber and HVAC jobs are with Calgary Housing, the City-owned company that houses more than 27,000 Calgarians. Both work four-day weeks on a five-week rotation.
The two water operator jobs stay open the longest, until Dec. 18, but want six years of experience and Level 2 water distribution certification.

Two jobs open to anyone 16 and up, but read the fine print
Neither of these needs a degree, and both are on-call, so they fit around school. Neither is a no-experience job, though.
Skate Monitor: $15.74 to $19.93 an hour, four on-call positions. You have to be at least 16, skate well, and hold Intermediate First Aid with CPR C before you apply. Closes Nov. 16.
Recreation Leader, Calgary AfterSchool: $17.83 to $22.03 an hour, up to 10 on-call positions. You need four months of experience in a day camp, sport, childcare or youth program, and volunteer time counts. The minimum age is 16 for children's programs and 18 for youth programs. Shifts are weekday afternoons and evenings. Closes Dec. 11.
Calgary police are hiring three deputy chiefs at the same time
A single deputy chief posting is rare. The Calgary Police Service has three open right now:
Two are labelled sworn/civilian, so you don't have to be a police officer to apply for them.
Unlike every other job here, none of the three lists a pay range. Salary is "commensurate with experience." All three close Dec. 1.
Don't apply through the City's careers site. CPS hired the executive search firm Janet Soles and Associates to run the search. Each posting tells you to send a CV and letter of interest to the firm with a specific subject line, so use the one in the posting.
CPS has two other leadership jobs open:
Clinical Director, Psychological Therapies: $159,610 to $199,512, the highest published salary of any City job right now. Closes Nov. 5.
Manager, Chief Crowfoot Learning Centre Administration: $115,627 to $144,534. Closes Nov. 11.
Engineers can earn up to $189,822

City Hall office jobs pay $39 to $68 an hour

A lot of these are temporary, usually 18 to 24 months. Each posting says whether the job is permanent, temporary or both, so check before you get attached to the pay.

Most of these schedules include a day off every three weeks. Before you apply, check whether the job is permanent or temporary, because six of the nine are temporary only.
How to apply
Every listing on our job board links straight to the posting on the City's careers site. New applicants have to create an account there, and the City asks for a resume and cover letter tailored to the job. Current City employees apply through a separate internal process. The three deputy chief jobs are the only exception: those go to the search firm.
Postings come down when they close, and the City adds new ones every week. We update the job board daily.
