The job hunting health-care fraud
Compliance Analyst, Department of Primary and Preventative Health Services — $76,613 to $100,492 a year. Closes September 17.
The role extracts and analyzes fee-for-service claims data to find "potential fraud, waste, abuse or other non-compliance within the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan."
In practice that means querying large health data sets, building dashboards to detect anomalies in claiming trends, and working with auditors and clinical advisors to determine the scope of potential non-compliance. Then translating the findings into plain language for people who don't read code.
Preferred experience includes SAS, SQL, R or Python, with Snowflake or a comparable cloud platform listed as an asset, plus visualization tools like Power BI or Tableau.
The requirement is a university degree in a related field plus two years of experience, with equivalencies accepted at one year of education for one year of experience and vice versa.
One permanent position. Monday to Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 36.25 hours a week.

What to know before applying
Read the classification code. The Compliance Analyst is a Program Services 3 (023PSA). Once you know your level, you can search every ministry for postings at the same grade and apply to several at once. That's why ten roles share the $82,168 band.
Competitions can fill future vacancies. Government of Alberta postings routinely state a competition may be used to fill future openings at the same or lower classification, anywhere in the public service. Applying once can put you in front of multiple hiring managers.
Include months and years for every role on your resume, and specify part-time or full-time. The postings ask for it explicitly and applications get screened out over it.
Address the APS competencies directly. Each posting lists them and they're scored. The Compliance Analyst names five: creative problem solving, systems thinking, drive for results, agility, and building collaborative environments.
Expect to pay for your own checks. The postings state that costs associated with required documents or interview travel are the candidate's responsibility.
Foreign credentials should be assessed through IQAS or a recognized Canadian evaluator, with the certificate attached to the application.
How to actually get hired
Public service hiring is a matching exercise before it's a judgment call, and most applications fail for procedural reasons rather than qualification ones.
Mirror the posting's language. Screeners are checking whether you meet stated requirements. If the posting says "extracting, querying, manipulating, validating, analyzing and reporting on large data sets," use those words about your own work.
Use the equivalency clause. Most postings accept one year of education for one year of experience, and vice versa. If you have six years and no degree, say so explicitly and do the arithmetic for them.
Have an example ready for each competency. They're listed on every posting and scored at interview. The Compliance Analyst names five.
Email the named contact. Every posting includes a real person's address. Most applicants never use it, and a short specific question before you apply means your name registers early.
Get the resume format right. Months and years on every entry, part-time or full-time specified. Applications get cut over this.
Apply across the whole classification level. Once you know your grade, every posting at that band is realistically open to you. A competition you don't win can still fill a future vacancy anywhere in the public service.
Expect silence. Only candidates selected for interviews are contacted, and it can take weeks.
