Airdrie is getting a major new health centre with urgent care, birthing services and surgery.
Residents will have to wait until 2031 for it to open.
The province announced Monday it's partnering with Covenant Health on the Airdrie Covenant Health Centre, planned to serve Airdrie, north Calgary and surrounding communities. It will house two connected facilities.
An Urgent Care and Birthing Centre, handling more than 30,000 urgent care visits and about 1,000 deliveries a year.
A Primary, Surgical and Ambulatory Care Centre, adding capacity for about 10,000 surgical procedures a year.
The proposed building is reported to be more than 300,000 square feet.
Two big details are missing. Nobody has said where it will go or what it will cost.
It isn't a hospital
People are going to search "Airdrie hospital" today, so it's worth being direct.
What's been announced is urgent care, birthing, surgery, primary and ambulatory care. A full-service hospital with an emergency department and inpatient beds is not part of this first phase.
Airdrie already has 24-hour urgent care at the Airdrie Community Health Centre, 604 Main Street S. Alberta Health Services describes urgent care as same-day treatment for problems that are unexpected but not life-threatening: broken bones, sprains, cuts, asthma, dehydration, infections and pain.
For anything life-threatening, AHS still tells people to call 911 or go to an emergency department.
The new centre is a large expansion of what's available locally. It's a different kind of building than a hospital.
A city that won't stop growing
Airdrie's 2026 municipal census counted 93,957 residents, up from 90,044 a year earlier. That's nearly 4,000 new people in twelve months.
In 2023 the city had 80,649. In 2004 it had 25,606.
Airdrie is now more than three and a half times the size it was two decades ago, and it's closing in on 100,000.
"Airdrie is one of Alberta's fastest-growing communities, and we're investing in its future," Premier Danielle Smith said. "This new health centre means more surgeries, more urgent care, and new birthing and specialized services for families in Airdrie."
A thousand births a year, closer to home
The birthing centre is the addition families will feel most.
It's planned for about 1,000 deliveries annually. For a city approaching 100,000, that could keep far more maternity care in Airdrie rather than sending families down Deerfoot to Calgary.
What the centre will actually offer, from prenatal to newborn care, hasn't been detailed. That will come as Covenant and the province work through planning.
Ten thousand surgeries
The surgical centre is aimed at planned procedures that don't need a major acute-care hospital. The province's examples are hernia repairs, gastroenterology and gynecological procedures.
Those are the operations that compete for time in big hospital operating rooms. Moving 10,000 of them into a dedicated facility frees space elsewhere.
Urgent care built to double
The urgent care side opens with capacity for more than 30,000 visits a year and room to scale to about 60,000.
The province says 35 to 70 per cent of emergency department visits could be handled at urgent care instead.
Airdrie already runs one of Alberta's relatively few dedicated urgent care centres. AHS lists others in Cochrane, Okotoks, east Edmonton and Calgary.
What happens to the existing Main Street operation once the new centre opens hasn't been said.
No price and no site
The province says the total cost will be released after land acquisition and competitive bidding are complete. Until then there's no public price tag.
There's no site either. The province will support buying land for the urgent care and birthing centre, but none has been identified.
Location matters more than usual here. The centre is meant to serve north Calgary and surrounding communities as well as Airdrie, so road access and where the city grows next will shape how useful it turns out to be.
Who's building what
The province will support construction and land acquisition for the Urgent Care and Birthing Centre.
Covenant Health will develop the Primary, Surgical and Ambulatory Care Centre.
Covenant runs 29 sites in 16 Alberta communities. Airdrie will be new for it.
The health centre is the first phase of a planned Covenant Wellness Community, a model Covenant has already built in southeast Edmonton. That site combines medical and surgical clinics, outpatient mental health, diabetes education, cardiac rehab, diagnostics and lab services in one place, with seniors' housing planned in later phases.
"Covenant Wellness Communities are about a simple idea: bring care together around people, rather than asking people to find their way between services," said Patrick Dumelie, Covenant Health's president and CEO. "And we're just getting started."
What eventually surrounds the Airdrie centre hasn't been announced.
Five years in a fast city
Airdrie added more than 13,000 people between 2023 and 2026.
By 2031 the centre will open into a noticeably bigger city than the one it's being planned for. The urgent care design, built to double, suggests that's already been accounted for.
Whether the birthing and surgical sides have the same room to grow is one of the things to watch.
What to watch
The site, which sets how well it serves Airdrie and north Calgary.
The cost, due after land and bidding.
The service list, particularly what maternity and gynecological care will be offered.
The fate of Main Street urgent care, which Airdrie relies on today and will keep relying on for five more years.
